Simple Ways to Protect Your Eyes During Long Hours of Screen Work

Screens are part of modern life, but hours of close-up focus can strain your eyes. Common symptoms include dryness, burning, blurred vision or headaches by the end of the day.

One easy rule is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This relaxes the focusing muscles that work overtime while you stare at close screens.

Blinking more often helps too. People tend to blink less while concentrating, which dries out the eye surface. Consciously closing and opening your eyes a few times during breaks can reduce that gritty feeling.

Adjust your setup: keep screens at arm’s length, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Avoid strong glare from windows or overhead lights. If needed, use lubricating eye drops recommended by your doctor.

If eye strain persists despite these adjustments, or you’re having repeated headaches and blur, get your eyes checked. You may need glasses, a change in power, or specific advice for computer use.
