Toothbrushes come in so many shapes that it’s easy to feel lost. Big head, small head, angled, straight – does it really matter? In practice, the best toothbrush is the one that lets you reach all surfaces comfortably and encourages you to brush properly twice a day.
For most adults, a smaller head is better than a very large one. A compact or medium-sized head can reach the back molars and the inside surfaces more easily, especially in smaller mouths. If you constantly bump your gums or struggle to manoeuvre, your brush may be too big.
Angled necks and slim heads help navigate behind the front teeth and near the gumline. If you have braces, crowded teeth or a small jaw, these designs can make a real difference.
Bristles should be soft or extra-soft, regardless of head shape. Hard bristles on a “perfect” head still cause damage if used with force. Electric and manual brushes both work; head shape still matters because you want control and comfort.
When you find a shape that feels natural and helps you clean thoroughly in two minutes, stick with it. Technique and consistency matter more than fancy designs.
